Wilford Racing takes points at Kyalami despite mechanical problems

This past weekend (February 3-5), Terry Wilford took home a points-paying finish in the 2021 season finale at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit while Larry Wilford was forced to withdraw after the practice sessions.

Terry reported handling issues in Thursday’s practice session, but a few component repairs and replacements on his Fuchs Lubricants Ford Falcon saw him delivering a solid performance in Friday morning’s qualifying session to set the sixth-fastest time. Larry’s new Fuchs Lubricants Chevrolet Corvette had a fuel delivery issue in Thursday’s early sessions with the problem proving terminal and forcing him to withdraw from the event.

The weekend’s first race was scheduled to take place on Friday afternoon, but a severe storm brought all on-track action to a halt. Subsequently, the race was cancelled with Saturday morning’s race seeing two laps added with a double points payload.

Terry looked solid in the midfield while the title contenders battled at the front of the pack, but in the closing stages, a clutch issue resulted in him spinning out and losing track position. He nevertheless completed the race in sixth place.

The final points table saw Terry finishing his season in fifth place. While his podium appearances for 2021 were limited to only two from 11 starts, he did walk onto the top step on both occasions. His pole position in Round 4 must also be noted as one of the season’s highlights. Larry, who only entered for two rounds of the season, finished in 15th position with his points coming from a sixth-place finish in Round 3.

“It was not our strongest season, but I will call this the proverbial calm before the storm” said Terry. “Particularly in the latter stages of 2021, we spent a significant amount of time preparing for our 2022 onslaught. We have seen the pay-off from this already in the new season’s opening round at last week. I know we had more pace this weekend, but we have an extensive break before our next round. This year, we are coming into things much stronger.”

While Larry had to withdraw, he remains optimistic about what lies ahead. “There are still issues that we need to resolve, but this Thursday provided us with more valuable feedback on our next steps as well. I am committed to the new season and in the next two months I know we will develop what is looking like a strong package. It is time to get the Wilford Racing name back the front of one of the world’s best V8 series.”
