Warren Lombard is set to start his 2022 motorsport season with a double-duty performance at Zwartkops Raceway this coming weekend (January 27-29).
An extended off-season break, brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, will see him returning for the opening round of this year’s Mobil 1 V8 Supercars championship. He will also be participating in the annual Pre ‘66/68 Le Mans Sports & GT 45 minute race on the Passion for Speed roster. This will take place just a week before the 2021 Mobil 1 V8 Supercars season finale is set to take place at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.
“It will be a busy 10 odd days ahead for us, but after a three-month break we are looking forward to it” says Lombard. “Our primary focus will be on the start of the new Mobil 1 V8 Supercars season. We have had a couple of strong podium results at Zwartkops and this year our goal is to be part of the front-running battles more often.”
2022 will be the PepBoys Automotive Ford Falcon driver’s third full season in the series. He made his debut in the 2019 season finale and stepped onto a race podium at the start of the 2020 season. On the 2021 points table, he is heading up the battle for fourth place against the experienced Terry Wilford.
“In 2021 we certainly improved considerably as a team, it is now time to display those improvements more frequently. For now, I’m putting the 2021 season finale at the back of my mind. This coming weekend the goal will be to start the new year as one of the title contenders. Given the qualify of drivers throughout the field and especially at the front, we know that it will not be an easy task. But we are ready to dig that little bit deeper for it.”
Pre ‘66/68 Le Mans Sports & GT 45 minute race will see Lombard behind the wheel of his PepBoys Automotive 1963 Ford Cobra. “This is always an enjoyable race and I will be looking to add some Class SGT silverware this weekend as well.”
The weekend will consist of a three-day programme, starting with a host of official and unofficial practice sessions on Thursday and the first half of Friday. Qualifying for both Lombard’s races will take place on Friday afternoon. Saturday’s two 12-lap Mobil 1 V8 Supercars races are scheduled for 10:05 and 16:20 with the Pre ‘66/68 Le Mans Sports & GT 45 minute race scheduled for 11:50.
Spectator tickets, limited to 2 000 under the current State of Disaster regulations, can be purchased via https://www.zwartkops.co.za/event/passion-for-speed-2022. The full Passion For Speed event will also be streamed live via the Warren Lombard Racing Facebook page and 2WheelsTV YouTube channels.
