In what is considered to be the home-race for most Gauteng-based teams, the Zwartkops Raceway offered up another exciting round of the ever-popular one-make cup championship.  Friday’s three practice sessions provided the Racing team with valuable setup data ahead of Saturday’s qualifying session. Unlike other teams, the former Haupt Racing Polo Cup team, now backed by French Fuel manufacturer, Total, had not participated at the previous round hosted earlier at the same circuit, with the team only making its debut at the following round in Cape Town.

As is always the case at the shorter Zwartkops Raceway, the circuit leaves little margin for error and set-up around the 2,4 km circuit needs to be perfect with drivers afforded few opportunities to hook-up the perfect lap. Saturday’s qualifying was closely-contested and saw Justin qualify in P10 and Darren in P14 with mere hundreds of a second separating the top-15.

Race 1, however, saw the duo improve on their starting positions to finish in a respectable P6 (#44) and P8 (#13). The final race of the day, which often sees more aggressive driving and frequently more incidents, saw Darren again improve his position to finish in P9, while Justin slipped back a position to finish P11, courteously of some ardent racing by a few competitors. The overall result saw the team finish within the top-10, with a P7 placing for Justin and a P9 placing Darren.

Round 6 of the 2019 Falken Polo Cup Championship heads to the East London Grand Prix Circuit over 30-31 August, home of the famous Potter’s Bend.
