Team owner and Class A competitor Mohamed Dangor impressed with sixth place on the grid during Friday evening’s Qualifying session. He crossed the line in seventh position; pursuing Jean-Pierre van der Walt to the line. The second race the duo recommencing their battle with Dangor taking another seventh place finish.
Stiaan Kriel continued his dominance of Class B. He went into Friday evening with pole position and his first point for the weekend in the bag. A solid start in Race 1 saw him create an immediate advantage, but an off-track excursion saw him relinquishing the lead to Jacques Smith. Kriel fought back hard and retook the lead by taking advantage of Smith running wide into the first corner. carrying on to record his first win for the day along with the fastest lap. Race 2 saw no mistakes and Kriel easily pulled away from the rest of the field to make it a double-win for the day and set another fastest lap. This saw him taking home a full house of points.
Robbie da Silva looked more confident than what he did on his previous outing at the circuit nine months prior. After Qualifying in tenth position, he followed this up with an 11th place finish, closely tucked in behind Craig Napier. The second race saw him finish in 13th position.
The weekend marked the team’s first entry in the Phakisa 200; the annual endurance race held at the circuit and run over a 200 km distance.
While Kriel successfully paired up with Monitor Net’s Deon Holliday, Dangor and Da Silva teamed up for the race in the latter’s Class B MotorMart Volkswagen Polo.
Dangor completed the first stint where after Da Silva brought the car home in fourth place in Class 111/X despite struggling with gearshift issues. During Dangor’s stint, he also set the fastest lap in the class.
“I felt confident throughout the weekend and I believe that today’s two MotorMart VW Challenge races validates it. We’re getting closer and closer to the front of the field with each race. The Phakisa 200 was a new and enjoyable experience. The fastest lap we recorded is certainly something to celebrate.”
“The Phakisa Freeway again treated me well this weekend. I had a bit of a nervous moment in Race 1, but fortunately I soon closed up to Jacques again to be able to take advantage of the gap he left open. This weekend also helped us a lot in the championship standings. I enjoyed the Phakisa 200. With all the time that myself and Deon spends competing against each other, it was great to team up alongside him and record the class win.”
Robbie da Silva:
“We had to work hard on finding the right setup on Friday morning on a dusty circuit. There’s a lot to quietly smile about, but also a lot that I’ll be taking forward from the weekend as well. The Phakisa 200 was a great experience, albeit a little tiring in the final stages due to our gearshift problems. We can be happy with results for the weekend, especially with all the hard work the entire team put into it.”
