The MotorMart Racing Team’s next stop on the 2019 MotorMart VW Challenge calendar will see them taking on Zwartkops Raceway. The March 8-9 race weekend will be the team’s first of three visits to this circuit for the season. Mohamed Dangor, Stiaan Kriel and Robbie da Silva will aim to maintain their strong form at this track; the same venue where they conduct the bulk of their testing.
Following a strong performance in Class A at the season-opener, Dangor is working hard on improving his pace in a bid to become a regular top-three contender. He will draw a bit of extra motivation from his previous two encounters at Zwartkops Raceway, but is the first to admit that life in Class A is a lot different from Class B: “For sure our Volkswagen Polo has a lot more power than what we had in 2018. With this extra power comes a different setup, earlier braking points and of course a completely different driving style. Our best lap of the Red Star Raceway weekend was set during the final lap of our second race. That shows me that we’re still digging into the full potential of the driver and car combination. Fortunately, Zwartkops Raceway is a circuit that I already know well. In fact, it is a circuit that the entire field knows quite well due to repeated competition and testing so our pace at Zwartkops Raceway will really be a true reflection of where we’re finding ourselves in the pecking order.”
Kriel’s 2019 Class B campaign got off to a victorious start, albeit in Mauritz Nigrini’s borrowed Volkswagen Polo. The car is still available for purchase, but in the meantime Kriel is rapidly turning it into a strong package to power further victories. Once again, he will be competing in this car during Round 2 and will be aiming to maintain his grip on the class: “If someone had told me that I would’ve taken my first Class B win in a car that I hardly knew the day before Round 1, I probably would’ve laughed it off. That said there is still a lot that we need to resolve in order to get it up to the pace that we will be happy with. I have a very good record at Zwartkops Raceway which I would like to maintain and we’ll certainly give it our best efforts.”
Robbie da Silva’s journey from strength-to-strength is set to continue when he takes on the Class B field. Between rounds, he has been doing a lot of work with Kriel to further improve his performance: “During our recent test sessions myself and Stiaan have worked a lot on my driving style and car control. I’m confident that this work will lead to strong results as we progress. There are also further aspects on the mechanical side that we are sorting out. The way we motivate each other in this team is superb and our results from Round 1 only inspires us to improve further.
Round 2 of the MotorMart VW Challenge will form part of the regional Extreme Festival and fans can expect a host of entertainment from four-wheel and two-wheel categories alike.
