The weekend started with Kriel finding good form early on Friday which he carried through all the way to Saturday morning’s qualifying session. Although the session came to an early halt following an incident, Kriel had already set the fastest time to secure pole position and add the first point of the day to his tally.

The first race saw Kriel making a good start to take a flag-to-flag victory while also setting the fastest lap to secure pole position for Race 2. Behind him, his Class A and overall championship rival Rory Atkinson finished in third position which subsequently saw Kriel overtaking him in the standings. Class B leader Jacques Smith also did not add any points to his tally.

A win and fastest lap in the second race would have been the ideal way to strengthen his grip on the title heading into the season finale, but this was not to be. On the opening lap Kriel was the victim of a Turn 2 incident which saw him relegated to seventh place while Atkinson took the lead. Kriel would however not give up that easily and gradually started carving his way through the field to finish the race in second position; just behind Atkinson. In the process he added another point with the fastest lap.

“We had a good weekend, we certainly had a battle on our hands in Race 2 and we’ve emerged at as the championship leaders.” Said Kriel at the end of a successful day at the circuit. “We now have our work cut out to ensure we stay ahead when the flag drops on our season. I’d like to thank my team for their hard work to provide me with the car to do it. Tonight, we can go home happy with today and ready for tomorrow.”

Kriel would like to thank his sponsors for making his 2018 season possible: , Dale Automation, Kalex, , , Geardown Gearbox & Diff, , , Performance Tuning, and

In addition, Kriel would also like to thank the associate sponsors of the MotorMart VW Challenge for making this exciting category possible: Norbrake Distribution, ATE Brakes, Dicktator Engine Management Systems, Yaskawa, BPM Engineering and Pozidrive.

The final round of the 2018 MotorMart VW Challenge will see Kriel in action again at Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday, November 10.
