Deon Holliday Jnr fought back hard to improve on his Qualifying position despite handling issues on the Monitor Net Volkswagen Polo at Zwartkops Raceway this past weekend (October 18-19) in the penultimate round of the 2019 MotorMart VW Challenge.
Friday’s practice sessions already showed that the car was not handling completely to his liking. “We could not pinpoint what the problem was which really frustrated me a lot. As drivers we like to feel confident when we get behind the wheel. Believe it or not, that little mental edge can also make quite a difference to how you attack the circuit.”
Saturday morning’s Qualifying session saw Holliday Jnr setting the sixth-fastest time early on. Another competitor who deposited oil on-track brought the session to a halt and after the resumption no one was able to improve on their times. He made his way up to fifth place in Race 1 before gaining another position in the afternoon’s second race.
“The car was not feeling all that good, but we came to fight for positions so we were not going to give up. In Race 1 especially I also had to battle with temperature issues as well. Although the day was extremely hot, that’s not something that you really want to take a chance with. We took home some solid points from the weekend in the end which is exactly what we needed.”
The final round of the 2019 MotorMart VW Challenge will take place at Zwartkops Raceway on November 8-9.
In addition, he would also like to acknowledge and thank the associate sponsors of the MotorMart VW Challenge for making this exciting category possible: Norbrake Distribution, ATE Brakes, Dicktator Engine Management Systems, Yaskawa, Pozidrive and BPM Engineering.
