Dream weekend for dominant Kriel at the Phakisa Freeway

was unbeaten for a second-consecutive year at the while competing in two categories on the June 7-8 weekend.

In Class B of the VW Challenge he extended his lead while closing in on overall championship leader Rory Atkinson with a full house of 23 points secured. The Klerksdorp driver then teamed up with Monitor Net’s Deon Holliday Jnr to conquer Class 111/X in the annual Phakisa 200.

Kriel only participated in two of Friday’s three Practice sessions prior to taking pole position in the late-afternoon Qualifying session.

Saturday morning’s first race saw Kriel making a good start to move into the lead. A Lap 2 off-track excursion saw him relinquishing the lead to Jacques Smith, but two laps later Kriel was quick to capitalise on Smith running wide into the first corner. He proceeded to complete the eight-lap race as winner while setting the fastest lap. Another good start from pole followed in Race 2 with Kriel gradually pulling away from the rest of the field over the eight-lap distance to record another win and fastest lap. This leaves Kriel unbeaten for the 2019 season.

In the Phakisa 200 Kriel drove the first stint, but disaster struck at the beginning when the accelerator cable came loose in the Monitor Net Polo. The repair cost the pair five laps, but Kriel gradually cut through the leader board to provide Holliday Jnr with a strong launch pad for his stint. Holliday Jnr crossed the line as winner of Class 111/X. The finish came with some good fortune as the car soon stopped on the side of the track without fuel.

“This was really a weekend to be proud of” said Kriel. “Not just because of the results, but mostly because of the solid team effort that we put into this. It was great partnering with my fierce rival yet good friend Deon for the Phakisa 200. We certainly cut it a little bit fine with the fuel, but having a good story to tell while celebrating our results just makes it even better.”
