Round 7 of the 2018 MotorMart VW Challenge saw the MotorMart Racing team shaking off their reliability blues with a host of points added to their championship tally. Both Mohamed Dangor and Quinton Needham secured double-points finishes at Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday, October 20; another first for the team in their debut season.
Mid-pack magic for Mohamed
Mohamed Dangor was confident heading into his second competitive visit to Zwartkops Raceway. This was validated with him showing improvements during Friday’s practice sessions; despite competing on very worn tyres. Saturday morning saw the qualifying session brought to an early halt following an incident. Dangor set the eighth fastest time in Class B and would not be able to improve on this due to a restart not being possible with a packed programme for the day.
The first race saw him making up two positions to finish in sixth place. The afternoon’s second race saw him having to deal with changing weather conditions; where he nonetheless did a superb job in the competitive Class B to finish in eighth place.
“Sadly, the halt to the qualifying session prevented us form posting a second flying lap, but we were ready to do battle in race conditions. Given our misfortunes at our last visit to Zwartkops Raceway and the fact that this is the home circuit for most of the field, I think we can be happy with today’s results. With the season finale also being hosted at Zwartkops in three weeks from now, we’ll of course be hoping to build on this.”
A breakthrough for Needham
Quinton Needham’s luck had to turn eventually. Following a host of DNF’s he was eager to add some Class A points to his tally at Zwartkops Raceway. Ending the day with a set of good results certainly left him smiling.
The results came despite very little testing time during Friday. Needham did not participate in the first session during the morning. The afternoon’s second session was cut short due to an incident which left him with the day’s final session to complete his setup. With qualifying also being shortened he secured seventh position for the start.
With the car feeling good Needham made up places to finish in fourth position. During the afternoon’s second race he finished in fifth position. This marked Needham’s first double-points finish since Round 1 of the championship as well.
“No reliability issues, no incidents and we’re back on the score sheet. It’s honestly just a good feeling to have completed the full race distance for the day. We’d like to maintain this momentum for the final round of the season. We’ve really worked hard for this.”
The results achieved in South Africa’s most competitive regional saloon car category over the weekend speaks of the progress made during the season. The MotorMart Racing Team have come a long way from battling a host of troubles during the initial part of the 2018. Dangor’s experience is growing with each event while Needham is finding his form again. What will the final chapter of the 2018 season hold for the team?
Round 8 of the 2018 MotorMart VW Challenge will see the MotorMart Racing team again competing at Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday, November 10.
