Not only did he shake off his bad luck at the circuit while taking two Class B podiums in Round 3 of the MotorMart VW Challenge, but Lady Luck also smiled on him on route to a successful Phakisa 200 debut.
Holliday Jnr qualified in third position on Friday afternoon after a good show of pace throughout the day’s Practice sessions.
Saturday’s first race saw him gaining a position with the retirement of second-place starter Stuart Mack, but losing out to Jacques Smith. He nevertheless delivered a solid performance to finish the race in third place. Race 2 saw him keeping Smith at bay to finish in second place.
Next on the cards for Holliday Jnr was his endurance race debut where he shared the driving duties in the Monitor Net Volkswagen Polo with Stiaan Kriel; the man who won both MotorMart VW Challenge Class B races earlier.
Kriel drove the first stint, but drama soon struck when the accelerator cable came loose. The repair set the team back by five laps, but Kriel soon started to carve his way through the field. This provided Holliday Jnr with a good launch pad to secure the Class 111/X win for the pair. The end of the race came just in time as the Monitor Net Volkswagen Polo ran out of fuel soon after the completion of the race.
“We had a great weekend at Phakisa” said Holliday Jnr. “Stiaan was simply in a class of his own in the MotorMart VW Challenge today. With that in mind I concentrated on securing the maximum amount of points available.”
Holliday Jnr continues regarding his change of fortunes at the circuit: “It feels good to shake off our issues from the last two years. The fortunes even turned in our favour this weekend. That accelerator cable could easily had come loose in our second MotorMart VW Challenge race. And of course, had it not come off, we easily could run into fuel problems in the closing stages of the Phakisa 200. So we really have a lot to smile about after the weekend.”
In addition, he would also like to acknowledge and thank the associate sponsors of the MotorMart VW Challenge for making this exciting category possible: Norbrake Distribution, ATE Brakes, Dicktator Engine Management Systems, Yaskawa, Pozidrive and BPM Engineering.
Round 4 of the 2019 MotorMart VW Challenge will see Deon Holliday Jnr in action at Zwartkops Raceway on June 28-29.
